ズグロチャキンチョウ、イワミセキレイ、コムシクイ、カラムクドリほか
久しぶりにズグロチャキンチョウが現れました。1週間ほど前に同じ田んぼで一瞬、確認できた個体と同じかの性が高いです。スズメ数百羽の群れに混じっていました。
イワミセキレイはいつもの林道に登場。今季、6個体目です。この時期の飛来だと越冬の可能性も高いですね。昨年は同所で越冬したイワミセキレイもいました。ただ、越冬モードに入ると林内にいることが多く、観察がしにくくなります。
コムシクイは10月上旬から姿を見せだしています。渡ってきたばかりは数羽の群れでいることが多いですが、現在は島内に分散してそれぞれが小さな縄張りを確保しています。このまま多くの個体が春まで滞在します。4月に入ると再び群れを形成して北上の準備し、さえずる個体も出てきます。
アトリも姿を見せています。スズメの群れにも合流し、田んぼで2期米のもみを食っていました。
カラムクドリはムクドリ主体の数十羽の群れに、ホシムクドリ20羽ほどとともに数羽が混じっていました。島内の越冬カラムクドリ自体の個体数は多く、数十羽の群れも公園などでよく観察されます。
この時期のジシギはタシギがほとんどですが、十数羽の群れの中にチュウジシギが2羽だけいました。2期米の収穫が始まると消えていなくなると思います。ほかのシギはアカアシシギやアオアシシギ、コアオアシシギ、セイタカシギ、タカブシギ、クサシギ、イソシギ、ヒバリシギなどが田んぼに逗留中。
カモも増えてきて、今季初のマガモを観察しました。石垣島や沖縄のマガモは以前はかなり少なかったですが、年々、観察される数が増えているような気がします。

Arctic Warblers are increasingly being heard calling near woodland edges of farmland. You can watch them foraging as they move busily through the trees.

A male Brambling eating rice. It is mid-moult, transitioning from breeding to winter plumage.
The Chestnut-cheeked Starling is the most numerous species on the island, but only a few were in the mainly White-cheeked Starling-dominated flock. Their foraging styles differ, so even when they join the flock they quickly go their separate ways.
A Common Starling in the same flock. Its foraging style is similar to the White-cheeked Starling's, so it has been staying with the flock for a long time.
A Brown Shrike caught in the rain. It was in a spot with a lot of foot traffic.
The Swinhoe's Snipe is becoming a scarce sight. I wonder if any overwintering individuals will be seen this season.
Common Snipe are staying in large numbers. Many individuals will go on to overwinter.
Common Greenshank in winter plumage. The second rice harvest is coming soon, which will drain the water from the fields, and I expect the sandpipers will disappear with it.
Common Redshanks present include both adults and juveniles. This individual is an adult still retaining some summer plumage.
Wood Sandpiper numbers are down, but they are still lingering.
The first Mallard of the season arrived — an adult male.
Crested Serpent Eagles are showing up regularly along forest roads and in the rice fields. From now until around March they can appear roadside too, so take care when driving.
