We'll drive you around Ishigaki Island to wherever the birds are showing best that day. Observation is mostly from inside the vehicle, and we keep it to a maximum of 3 guests so everyone can take their time.
ズアカアオバトが抱卵していました。 通常、もっと込み入った場所で営巣 するので、いつもまともに観察できないのですが、この巣は、非常に見やすい場所にあります。巣立ちまで見届けようと思います。

リュウキュウオオコノハズクを撮りたいという写真家の方をガイドしてきた。5月には、ノグチゲラを案内して、今回、写真展で飾るプリントも見せてもらった。横120センチの大迫力プリントが銀座のニコンサロンに飾られるとのこと。
今夜は、リュウキュウオオコノハズクのヒナが3羽で餌取りをしていました。巣立ち後、1カ月ぐらいは経っているようなので自分で獲物を捕まえていた。セミの幼虫が羽化しようと土の中から出てくるところを狙っているようで3羽とも地面ばかり見ていました。
沖縄本島に赴任して1年と5カ月、やっとこれが撮れた。^^ 営巣地も3カ所見つけたので、来年こそは営巣序盤から観察したいものです。
先日、別の場所で撮影した成鳥 と比べると顔つきが幼いことが分かりますね。
まだ、親鳥からも餌をもらうこともあるようで、餌をねだるときのリュウキュウオオコノハズクのヒナの鳴き声を確認することができました。親鳥の撮影はかなわず。
近くでは、アカショウビンの巣立ったヒナが3羽並んで眠っていました。その横には、獲物を探しにきたアオバズクも止まっていましたが、お互い知らんぷりだった。

A different individual from the one above. All three juveniles had shed their greater coverts — moult appears to be progressing.
At this time of year large numbers of cryptotympana cicadas and Ryukyu brown cicadas emerge, so prey seems to be no problem. Not just the Scops Owls — Ruddy Kingfishers and others also frequently catch cicada larvae in the evening.
An Oriental Scops Owl that feels like the bottom half is adult and the top half still juvenile.
