石垣島でバードウオッチング(2日目)
石垣島の2日目は、前日の忘年会の酒が残っているといけないので10時ごろまでホテルでごろごろしていました。
今期の石垣島製糖工場は12月4日からサトウキビの受け入れが始まっており、それに合わせてサトウキビ農家は一斉にサトウキビの刈り取りを開始します。キビの機械刈りが始まるとハーベスターに驚いて畑から飛び出してくるネズミやカエル、昆虫などを狙ってカンムリワシやアマサギなどが畑の周りに集合します。今の時期や水稲の刈り取りの時期はカンムリワシの飛翔写真を撮る大チャンスです。
2日目は、あちこちでキビ刈りが行われており、カンムリワシも10個体以上観察しました。下の動画は、サトウキビを収穫するハーベスターとスプリンクラーの上で獲物を待つカンムリワシです。かなりやかましいハーベスターですが、餌に夢中なカンムリワシやサギたちには関係ないようです。
田んぼではカンムリワシ以外にもサシバやチョウゲンボウ、冬羽のアカガシラサギやタゲリ、シロハラクイナが獲物を求めて活動していました。諦めきれずにアオシギを探していると口元からグッピーがのぞくリュウキュウヨシゴイに出会いました。^^

The spread wings show the back, so you can see the state of the moult.
It was working hard at hunting despite being buffeted by strong winds.
It seems the Crested Serpent Eagle takes several years to complete a full moult, so the old feathers are ragged. You catch a glimpse of the hardship of life in the wild.
The Ryukyu Minivet appeared to be mid-hunt. A guppy is peeking out from the side of its bill. ^^
A Chinese Pond Heron that caught a mole cricket at the field's edge.
It gave the prey a quick rinse in the water before eating it.
The Chinese Pond Heron is one size smaller than the Little Egret and one size larger than the Yellow Bittern.
Two Northern Lapwings had come into a harvested pasture. Both were juveniles.
This one was a Northern Lapwing in a rice paddy.
The White-breasted Waterhen walked along the farm road, occasionally pecking for food in the grass.
