We'll drive you around Ishigaki Island to wherever the birds are showing best that day. Observation is mostly from inside the vehicle, and we keep it to a maximum of 3 guests so everyone can take their time.
下草が綺麗なところにヤツガシラがいました。が、私の車が止まったもんだから、ドイツ人カップルのヒッチハイカーが乗せてもらおうと駆け寄ってきて飛ばしてしまいました…。^^; まぁ、今年はヤツガシラの当たり年なんでどーってことないけど。もちろん、ドイツ人カップルは所望の場所まで乗せました。今年はヒッチハイカーを乗せる機会も多い…。^^;
Fresh green shoots were just coming out. Spring is near. This individual never once raised its crest.
An Eyebrowed Thrush that seemed unafraid of people, coming closer and closer.
名蔵の田んぼで、アカガシラサギが2羽トラクターの後をついて餌を捕っていました。他のアマサギやコサギに比べると警戒心が強いので、それらの集団の一番後ろでしたが餌は捕れている模様。
There was a bit of distance between us. The other bird was startled by a tractor and went into the undergrowth and never came back out.
カンムリワシがズグロミゾゴイを食っていると、この辺りで一番強いカンムリワシに見つかり獲物を掴んで逃げ出しました。近くにいたカラスは逃げるカンムリワシの背中に完全に乗っていました。^^; その後、藪の中まで追っていったカンムリワシに獲物を横取りされたようで、情けない鳴き声を上げながら手ぶらで出て来ました。これも名蔵での出来事。

ちょうど、こちらに飛んできそうなカンムリワシがいたので、Canon で鳥撮りに最適だと思われる EF600 F4L IS II USM と EXTENDER EF1.4×III と 1D X のフォーカスをテストしてみました。連続撮影した14枚を掲載します。
いつもはシャッタースピードを1/800から1/1000ぐらいで撮るのですが、天気が悪く暗かったので1/640で撮りました。

石垣島はサシバの越冬地ですが、年々数が減っています。昨年行ったやんばるにはたくさんのサシバが越冬していました。

夕方、崎枝半島を回るとヤツガシラが歩道にいました。渡ってきたばかりのヤツガシラはだいたい変なところにいますね。^^;
カーブでレンタカーがいきよいよく通る道なので、写真はあまり撮れず記録だけ。ぶれてます。
A spot a few tens of metres from where I found the two Eurasian Hoopoes the other day. I wonder if the Sakieda Peninsula is a gateway for hoopoes arriving on migration?
広いサトウキビ畑のど真ん中でカンムリワシが死んでいました。DNA検査のため、環境省経由で本土に送ります。
Cause of death — starvation? Illness? Or did it eat a rat that had been poisoned? …
ヤツガシラ1羽いましたが、車内から撮れない場所にいたので、車から降りて手持ちで撮ってみました。
エクステンダーの1.4倍とつけていたので、840mm。それでもほとんどぶれなく撮れました。やはり、EF 600mm F4 IS II USMの4段分のイメージスタビライザーと軽量化は伊達じゃない!!

やっとって感じでソリハシセイタカシギが平田原にやってきました。^^;
Rice planting had started, so it will probably move on somewhere else.
The colours look cold, but Ishigaki today is over 20°C. From tomorrow I'm off to Hokkaido, where it's forecast to be nearly 30 degrees colder than here. ^^;

天地返しの始まったサトウキビ畑でカンムリワシがオオヒキガエルを襲っていました。毒が心配されるヒキガエルですが、カンムリワシの獲物のかなりの量を占めています。腹から食って毒腺のあたりは食わないのは、カンムリワシが本能的に毒の怖さを知っているのでしょうか。
It was tearing into the cane toad from inside the mouth and eating it. Compared with the Crested Serpent Eagle, you can see just how large the cane toad is.
The calls of another Crested Serpent Eagle could be heard in the distance, so it was eating nervously. It worked through the prey in order: tongue, oesophagus and stomach, then heart and lungs, then the forelegs.
It seemed bothered by the distant Crested Serpent Eagle calls, grabbed the prey, and disappeared into the forest. I wanted to see what was left when it finished eating, but… ^^;

この日は、マイナス15度まで下がりました。前日、あまり下がらないとの予報でしたが、一安心。
石垣島を出発するときは、24度だったのでその差は39度。日本列島は縦長ですねー。^^;
On the first day the weather was fine, temperatures dropped, and the ice that had formed on the trees was beautiful.

The first night was clear. A sky full of stars. Still, the starry sky over Ishigaki in summer is something else.
今回はエゾフクロウがついていました。鶴居村の林道を数百メートル入ったところでは、なんとカップルで洞から顔を出しているではないですか!! 思わず男泣きしましたよ。4年連続通ってやっとこさ。^^;
釧路空港近くの洞は留守でしたが、シラルトロの湿地にある洞には1羽だけいました。早朝はいなかったそうですが、霧が晴れたらやってきたそうです。
シマフクロウは今回は観察できず…。
After four years of visits, I finally got to see a pair of Ural Owls. ^^

流氷のオオワシ、オジロワシも見てきました。かなりの流氷が押し寄せていて、港から数十メートルしか出ることができませんでした。おかげで、岸寄りにワシが集まり、堤防からのギャラリーも船に乗船せずにして観察できていました。
Juvenile White-tailed Eagles are the best-looking, aren't they.
This one is also a juvenile White-tailed Eagle.
They seemed quite well-fed, and there wasn't much fighting over food.

Adult Steller's Sea Eagle. Juvenile Steller's Sea Eagles were scarce this time.
Overcast skies, and sunrise was visible only through a small gap in the clouds. Last year was so much better.
