We'll drive you around Ishigaki Island to wherever the birds are showing best that day. Observation is mostly from inside the vehicle, and we keep it to a maximum of 3 guests so everyone can take their time.
アンパルの水路にカモが増えてきましたが、ミサゴの餌場でもあるので上空をミサゴが飛ぶたびにカモたちはパニックになっています。^^;
When the Osprey appeared, the ducks panicked.
There were Eurasian Wigeons, Eurasian Teals, and Northern Shovelers. When startled by the Osprey they took off, circled above Ampar a few times, then came back.
浦田原にフラッグを付けたクロツラヘラサギがいました。山階鳥類研究所へ報告しました。2010年6月16日に韓国の仁川で放された個体のようです。昨日の夕方、仕事帰りに平田原を通った時に見つけたクロツラヘラサギにはフラッグがついていませんでしたので、石垣島には2羽渡ってきているようです。 昨年は、10月14日に18羽確認 しています。
平田原にはアカガシラサギが飛来していました。少し警戒心の強い個体でした。同じ田圃のタカブシギたちは猛禽に襲われて完全に怖気づいて集まっていました。
You can make out the characters 'K91' on the right leg of the Black-faced Spoonbill. It was foraging in the paddies, sweeping its bill from side to side.
The Black-faced Spoonbill then took off and flew away.
The Chinese Pond Heron was in the same paddy field as yesterday.

新石垣空港近くの牛種子牧場に9月ぐらいからベニバトが何羽か入っています。入れ替わりもあるかと思いますが、現在は最低でもオス2羽とメス2羽がいると思われます。今日は、有刺鉄線にキジバトと仲良く並んで止まっていました。^^ ちなみにこの牧場は「石垣牛専門店いしなぎ屋」の直営牧場です。
Standing next to the Oriental Turtle Dove really highlights just how small the Little Button-quail... — the smallness of the Pale-backed Pigeon is striking next to an Oriental Turtle Dove.
I thought it had landed on the ground, but it was so far away. Even with cropping, this is the best I could manage with such a tiny Little Buttonquail. ^^;
オニアジサシの成鳥冬羽が磯辺川河口にいました。車で走ってたら見えたのですが、さすがにでかいのですぐに目に付きます。^^
最初は、すぐに降りてしまい、羽繕いなどに余念がなかったのですが、しばらくすると沿岸を飛び回りながら獲物を探していました。オニアジサシは大きいので獲物も大きなボラを捕まえたようでした。
満潮の砂浜には、シロチドリやオオメダイチドリ、イソシギなどが休んでいました。
The Caspian Tern seemed bothered by its own shadow and spent much of its time staring at the ground.
It was quartering back and forth between Ohama settlement and the mouth of the Isobu River, staying roughly ten-odd metres from the shore, searching for prey.

After eating the mullet it seemed satisfied and went back to resting. Efficient hunting.
On the beach, a Kentish Plover was resting out of the wind behind some pebbles.

取材の合間に浦田原をうろついていたら、「アンパルの自然を守る会」の方たちに会い、ゴルフ場予定地の調査に向かうとのことなので、同行させてもらいました。
帰り道、同じ浦田原の田んぼの一角にクロツラヘラサギが2羽飛来していました。1羽は左足を怪我しているようでした。 先日のフラッグ付きのクロツラヘラサギ もいるようなのですが、見つけられませんでした。
There wasn't much water in the paddy, but two Black-faced Spoonbills were working hard searching for food.

This one is a healthy individual.
Strong northerly winds were blowing, so the Eastern Cattle Egrets took refuge on the water plants instead of their usual roost tree.
久しぶりにカンムリワシの飛翔を撮影。いつもと違う設定で撮影してみたらこれがバッチリでした。^^ 背景が近い時は、しばらくこの設定で撮影を試してみようと思います。

Prey caught. It's gripping a grasshopper in its left foot. Seems a bit small for a Crested Serpent Eagle. ^^;
It carried the prey into a leafy thicket and ate it there.
When it heard the call of another Crested Serpent Eagle, it flew off to a branch with a better view.
ムネアカタヒバリの群れを観察していたら、ハイイロチュウヒのメスが突撃してきました。背後から急に現れたので とっさの撮影でした…。^^;
ハイイロチュウヒがやってきて、慌てて逃げたチョウゲンボウ2羽のうち1羽はしばらくして戻ってきました。
近くにはサシバが2羽いてバッタなどを捕まえていました。上空をミサゴが飛んでいくのですが、カタグロトビには出会えず。
牛小屋の周りには、コムクドリ、カラムクドリ、ホシムクドリ、ムクドリなどが集まっていました。
明日から2泊3日で西表島で探鳥してきます。イリオモテヤマネコも見られたらなー。
It came from behind and I noticed it too late, so I grabbed a shot on the spot. Managed to get it. ^^;
Two juvenile Grey-faced Buzzards were at the Ushitanega ranch. No Pale-vented Pigeon to be found.
This is the Common Kestrel that had been frightened by the Hen Harrier. It was startled by the harrier and disappeared for a while, but came back after some time. I watched and photographed it for a bit, but it was spooked by a car and flew off and didn't return. ^^;
A different day, but here's a Common Buzzard. This area is full of raptors.
2泊3日で西表島へ探鳥、イリオモテヤマネコ探しに行ってきました。
残念ながらイリオモテヤマネコは見つかりませんでしたが、ノドアカツグミをはじめ、45種の野鳥が観察できました。^^
カンムリワシは15個体ほど観察できました。石垣島よりも多い印象です。アオバズクも石垣島よりも多く観察できました。西表島のアオバズクは石垣島よりも警戒心があまりありません。かなり近くまで寄れました。コノハズクは石垣島の方が多い印象です。また、オオコノハズクと昨年も同じころ現れたシロガシラトビも狙っていたのですが、見つけられませんでした。^^;
西表野生生物保護センター の「 西表島クイズラリー 」も挑戦したのですが、クイズの設置場所すら分からないところがある難しさ…。とりあえず20問中の半分を解いて1問間違いでした。来月あたり、再チャレンジで西表島に渡ります!!
Around midday on the first day, while checking the pastures at Minamihazama, I spotted a bird that looked like a Pale Thrush or maybe a Dusky Thrush. When I put the binoculars on it — a Black-throated Thrush? As I was trying to get a better look, a light truck came by and flushed it. Thrushes tend to return to the same feeding spot even after being flushed, so I waited about 20 minutes and it appeared again. Looking again through the binoculars, it was a male Red-throated Thrush in first-winter plumage. Just as I was about to shoot, a Common Kestrel flushed it again — but sure enough, while I was eating my lunch in the car it came back. ^^
It stood up on a perch and showed me its back as well.

The 40th species on my Iriomote birding list was a Chinese Pond Heron.

A beam was shooting out from the meridian monument, and there was a Ryukyu Scops Owl catching moths attracted to the light.
久しぶりにカタグロトビを探しに出たのですが、サシバ、チョウゲンボウ、ハイイロチュウヒ、カンムリワシぐらいしか見つかりませんでした。^^;
夜、シロハラなどの渡りの鳴き声が聞こえるのですが、出会いはなかった。
A small bird, apparently a Buff-bellied Pipit, was mobbing the Common Kestrel.
I also came across a few wintering Grey-faced Buzzards.
先日から広い行動範囲を移動するカタグロトビですが、本日は3羽撮影することができました。
2羽はカップルなのでしょうか、いつも近くにいて、今日も同じ木に休んでいるところをカラスにモビングされたりしていました。その2羽の撮影の帰り道、数百メートル離れたところでもう1羽のカタグロトビがホバリングしていました!!
カラスや、小鳥にモビングされてかわいそうなカタグロトビはいつまで石垣島に滞在してくれるのでしょうか。
I can't tell if it's male or female — but this is one of the pair that always stays together. Shot from a spot I can only get into with my mentor. Might be the closest I've ever been. ^^
This one arrived before the Black-winged Kite above. Could it be female?
On the way back, a Black-winged Kite was hovering over the sugarcane fields. The third individual of the day. ^^

It was hassled by several crows, but went right at them despite its small size.
The Black-winged Kite finally circled leisurely over the sugarcane fields before disappearing toward the forest.
1週間ぐらい前から鳴き声が聞こえているシロハラでしが、底地ビーチには随分人慣れしたシロハラがいました。ビーチの防風林を歩いていて、足元でガサガサしているのは、最初ネズミかと思ったらシロハラでした。底地ビーチの防風林には数羽のシロハラがいました。昨年も11月半ばから鳴き声が聞こえ始め、 11月22日に初撮影 でした。
浦田原にはクロツラヘラサギが、白水ではカンムリワシの幼鳥が餌を探していました。
My first Pale Thrush photos of the season. I've been hearing Pale Thrushes calling on migration at night for about a week now.
A very confiding individual — I could get to within about two metres. Unusual for a Pale Thrush, which is normally quite wary.
At the rice paddies of Uradahara, a Black-faced Spoonbill was sweeping its bill from side to side in search of food. Small pond snails appeared to be its main prey.
A juvenile Crested Serpent Eagle after a long absence. It was in the waterway at Shiromizu.
平田原でキジバトの100羽ほどの群れにベニバトのメスが1羽交じっていました。ウオーキングの人に驚いて飛び立つたびにキジバトに交じって探すのに苦労しました…。^^;
浦田原には 先日観察したフラッグのついたクロツラヘラサギ がいました。韓国仁川で放されたものです。
昨日今日と寒い一日で、最高気温は21度ほどまでしか上がりませんでした。
The small-bodied Pink-necked Green Pigeon stood shorter than the rice stubble, making it difficult to photograph.
At this time of year, there is a very good chance that Pale-capped Pigeons are mixed in among flocks of Oriental Turtle Doves. When they take flight, the whitish tips of the tail feathers are a helpful distinguishing mark.

夕方、少し時間ができたので、白水でレンカクを観察してきました。スイレンとウオーターレタスの繁茂する川でオオバンやバンに交ざって餌を探し回っていました。
ツグミも5羽ほどの小さな群れが入っていました。シロハラ、ツグミは先日から見かけ、ハチジョウツグミも本日、社の駐車場で観察しましたので、あとはアカハラの到着待ちですね。^^
A Pheasant-tailed Jacana walking across water lilies. The flowers are closed because it was evening — they stay open until around noon.
It moves across the water lily pads on its large feet, foraging for food.
Thrushes are becoming more numerous as well.
