We'll drive you around Ishigaki Island to wherever the birds are showing best that day. Observation is mostly from inside the vehicle, and we keep it to a maximum of 3 guests so everyone can take their time.
子育て中のリュウキュウコノハズクを石垣島でバードウオッチングガイドを営むスポッターさんに教えてもらいました。ヒナは一人っ子ので孵化して間もないとのことです。
オス親は巣の近くで見張りをしていました。私が現場に着いた時はメス親が樹洞の中に入っていました。メスが出かけると外からヒナの姿が丸見えのようです。
人通り、車通りのある道路のすぐ脇で営巣するとは、ずいぶん人馴れしたコノハズクです。^^;

土曜日からお客人が石垣島へブロンズトキを見にやって来るので連日の下見。今日もいつもの田んぼでのんびりと採餌したり羽繕いしたりとリラックスした様子。本土だったら、大勢の人が押し寄せてこうはいかんのだろうなー。
今日は、夕方にブロンズトキの田んぼに行くと先客のレンタカーが1台。ど逆光で撮ってたけど、あれでブロンズトキの金属光沢は出るんだろうか?
撮りにくい田んぼではあったけど、なんとか順光で撮れるように移動。斜め45度ぐらいでなんとか行けました。^^
A bit more of the Glossy Ibis's characteristic sheen came out.
The prey appeared to be small snails and dragonfly nymphs.
When it clouds over, the Glossy Ibis goes dull in an instant. ^^;
Even when dull, it's still a beautiful bird.
It was quite far away, but there was a female Greater Painted-snipe.
リュウキュウコノハズクが1羽巣立ちました。巣立ち後、1日目なので営巣木に止まっていました。
他の兄弟の巣立ちはまだのようで、親鳥は近くで見張りをしています。
アオバズクは7月上旬、7月下旬にかけてはコノハズクの巣立ちラッシュが続きます。
A Ryukyu Scops Owl chick that had fledged the previous night.
The siblings apparently remain in the tree hollow; the parent is staring intently at the nest entrance. This is a behaviour seen in parent Brown Hawk-Owls and scops owls when fledging is imminent.
6月25日に発見した石垣島のブロンズトキ は滞在16日目となりました。最初に見つけた田んぼからは2キロ余り移動しましたが新しい田んぼで落ち着いて滞在しています。
ブロンズトキは、多分みなさんが想像しているよりかなり小さいです。図鑑などで見ると全長37センチのセイタカシギに対してブロンズトキは全長46センチから66センチなのですが、数値ほどの差は感じません。海外のサイトなどを見てみるとコサギとほとんど同じサイズに見えるのですが、この個体が特別小さめなのでしょうかね?
The Glossy Ibis and the Black-winged Stilt behind it look not all that different in size.
It was busily walking around the flooded paddies, picking up aquatic insects and the like.
Stretching. Today the sun was at a bad angle and the glossy ibis colours didn't really come through.
第25回参院選が始まり、沖縄本島へ行ってきました。私の担当の第一声は瀬嵩の浜から。取材を終え、出稿も終えたので帰り道、何箇所かで鳥見。
リュウキュウアオバズクが2カ所で巣立っていました。1カ所はヒナが1羽出ていました。残りの兄弟はまだ樹洞の中かな。もう一カ所のアオバズクはヒナの鳴き声を頼りに探すと逆光と茂った葉でわずかにシルエットを確認。こちらも兄弟が樹洞に残っているようでした。あと数日もしたら複数羽並んだ姿が見られたかもしれませんね。
ツバメチドリはすでに飛べるまでに成鳥した3兄弟が畑にいました。まだ親鳥に餌をもらっているようでした。
Female Brown Hawk-Owl. Collared Scops Owl and Ruddy Kingfisher also breed in this area.
The male. Only one fledgling was vaguely visible… ^^;
This is a Brown Hawk-Owl from a different location. Sexing this pair is tricky, but this one is the male.
And the female. She seems bothered by the noise from a kindergarten excursion that had arrived nearby.
A fledged Brown Hawk-Owl chick. It looks like the youngest of the brood, but no others could be found.
A juvenile Oriental Pratincole. About 30 days old, perhaps.
This one might be the second chick.
I'm fairly sure this is the youngest.
The parent. Sex unknown. The summer plumage is heavily worn.
