狩りに失敗するサシバと警戒心が強いシマアカモズ
仕事で国頭村まで行ったついでにサトウキビ畑を見回ってみました。サシバはあちこちにチョウゲンボウは少数見られました。中でも人馴れしてそうなサシバを見つけたので、車内から狙ってみると獲物を見つけて飛び出しました。しかし、刈り取られたサトウキビの山から隠れて撮っていたので、肝心の狩りの瞬間は死角に入ってしまった…。回り込んで見てみると失敗した模様で呆然としたサシバが刈り取られたサトウキビ畑で佇んでいた。
シマアカモズは以前よりちらちらと気配があった個体。警戒心が強く、よく観察させてくれなかったけど、この日はしばらく待ってみると見やすい場所へ出てきてくれました。他のモズの可能性も期待したのですが、やはりシマアカモズでした。

It seems the prey got away — the bird just stood there looking dazed.
Adult female Brown Shrike. This winter there had been several brief glimpses of a bird I couldn't quite confirm as a Brown Shrike, so wary was it. At last it came out somewhere I could actually get a photo.
Once it caught prey, it went straight into the undergrowth. When it finished eating it came back out to a spot with a clear view and started hunting again.
