沖縄にコウノトリがやって来た(動画あり)
沖縄本島や本島周辺の離島で散発的に観察されていたコウノトリにやっと出会うことができました。今年は、石垣島でも観察、撮影されていますので県内に最低でも2個体が滞在していることになります。
知り合いよりコウノトリを見たとメイルをもらい、翌日、現場に駆けつけると刈り取りが終わったサトウキビ畑にたたずむコウノトリをあっさりと発見することができました。このコウノトリは行動範囲が広いようで半径10キロ圏内の畑や牧草地なのに出没しているようです。シーズン序盤に何度かチャレンジしたコウノトリですが、このように移動が激しいと見つからないわけです。石垣島のコウノトリもあちこちに移動して見つけるのが大変と聞いております。
コウノトリは、しばらく見ているとバッタを捕まえたりハブを捕まえたりしていました。
近くの茂みでは今季初のウグイスのさえずりを聞きました。
Oriental Storks go into the grass so often that, despite their size, they can actually be surprisingly hard to spot.

When I found it, it was standing like this at the edge of a sugarcane field.
It was pushing steadily into the grass, apparently searching for prey.
In the sugarcane field it caught a snake. Zooming in, I could see it was a habu. Even habu venom appears powerless against the Oriental Stork's long, powerful bill.
The Oriental Stork didn't slam the habu against anything — it simply crushed the head with its formidable bill to finish it off, then swallowed it whole.
This is what it looks like with wings spread. A juvenile, clearly. It must have hatched and grown up on the continent this year.
