先日、オスとメスでいたヨシガモ がメスだけになっていました。他にいたヒドリガモやオカヨシガモも全ていなくなっていたのですが、ヨシガモのメスはオオバンたちと残っていました。先日見たとき、ヨシガモのメスが妙にオオバンの後をついて回っていておかしいなと思っていたのですが、どうもこのヨシガモのメスは種を超えてオオバンのことが好きになり残ることに決めたようです。^^;

夜間、気晴らしに農道をドライブしていると見慣れないシルエットが視界に入りました。懐中電灯で照らしてみるとなんとトラフズク!! 地面に降りていることもあり、すっかりコミミズクだと思っていましたが、トラフズクでした。訂正します。
トラフズクはすぐに飛び立って行きましたが、闇夜の中、獲物のネズミを探しているのだろうとそのまま農道に車を走らせると大きなネズミを捕まえたトラフズクが目の前に現れました。捕まえたネズミはかなり大きいのでドブネズミでしょうか? 一旦その場を離れ、数分して戻るとトラフズクは小雨が降る中、ネズミをうまそうに食っていました。
沖縄では初めての対面です。春の渡りの途中だ思われます。
数年前に石垣島でコミミズク を見ているので、これで沖縄で見ることのできるフクロウ全種達成です。^^

After a while the Long-eared Owl flew off with the mouse still clutched in its talons, disappearing once again into the dark night.
春の渡りが始まっています。きょうはムネアカタヒバリを50羽近く確認しました。渡りの途中なので移動が激しく、一日で増えたり減ったりしています。
近くにはムクドリの群れがいた。

そろそろ飛去してしまうヤマシギを見てきました。やはり今夜も3羽のヤマシギがそれぞれ数十メートルの間隔をおいて採餌していました。やんばるのヤマシギは群れで移動しながら餌を探していますが、ここのヤマシギたちは一緒になりません。お互いの存在は分かっているはずなのですが、なんでだろ?

3年間の沖縄本島勤務を終え、4月から石垣島勤務となるため、アパート探しで島へ行ってきました。
ついでにタカサゴモズを見てきました。昨年の11月には一瞬だけ飛び去るのを見ていましたが、写真に収めるのは 2011年 以来8年ぶり。久しぶりのタカサゴモズは見慣れたシマアカモズよりかなり大きかった。
現場に着くとすぐに発見したのですが、田んぼに作業が入ってしまいタカサゴモズは田んぼ3枚分離れたススキに止まった。遠い。田んぼの作業も終わりそうにないので、農家の人に事情を話し農道に入らせてもらい近距離から撮影でしました。^^
ヤツガシラとクロウタドリの情報も石垣島ナンバーワンの野鳥ガイドのスポッターさんいもらったのですが、4月から住む家探しがメインの石垣島入りだったので、時間が足りず探せませんでした。

When it spotted prey, it would drop down onto the paddy bund. I could not make out the prey itself.

When the Long-tailed Shrike flew, the wagtails and pipits scrambled to flee. They don't react that way to Bull-headed Shrike, but they seem genuinely frightened of the Long-tailed Shrike.
The Long-tailed Shrike has a long tail and an outstanding figure.
ヤマシギが3羽越冬していたポイントは残り1羽だけになっていました。
ヤマシギまで近くて明かりもあっていいフィールドだった。今季もヤマシギはそろそろ見納めになりそうです。
It had caught an earthworm or something — swallowed it surprisingly fast.
There must be plenty of food where this clover grows thick; the Eurasian Woodcocks are always in this spot.
The Eurasian Woodcock I can always observe at closest range. Probably the same individual.
Failure. ^^; The speedlight on the right misfired and a big shadow stretches across the frame….

White Wagtails numbered several dozen. They were in various stages of moult.
Adult female Northern Lapwing. The moment it catches and swallows an earthworm or something.
Wood Sandpipers also in small groups here and there. They were watching a helicopter flying overhead.
昨年から目をつけていた金武町伊芸地区のポイントにヤツガシラが入りました。沖縄本島赴任になった当初から周りからは「沖縄本島ではヤツガシラは難しい」と言われており、一昨年も昨年もその言葉通り見つけることができませんでした。しかし、最後の赴任の年の最後の月に運良く見つけることができました。
ヤツガシラはまだ渡って来たばかりのようで、海岸沿いの荒地に座り込んでいました。しばらくは全く動きませんでしたが、そこは健啖家のヤツガシラ。餌を探し始めると地面をミシンのように突き回って土中に潜む獲物を探し出していた。
ヤツガシラを発見した場所は、交通量がそれなりにあるので長くは滞在しないでしょう。春の渡りの最中ということもあり、2日間滞在したらいい方でしょうね。
沖縄本島では貴重なヤツガシラなので、鳥仲間6人に連絡すると、なんとそのうちの3人がその場所から15分圏内にいるという偶然。私は先に帰りましたが、みなさん観察、撮影することができたようです。^^
The Eurasian Hoopoe had been still for a while, but then spread its magnificent crest, had a good stretch, and started probing the ground in search of prey.
It had moved into an area where the casuarina windbreak along the coast had been partially cleared, leaving sparse, low weeds growing among the gaps.
The Eurasian Hoopoe as I found it. It seemed worn out from the long journey and stayed in this posture without moving for some time.
一昨日は、沖縄本島北部の金武町伊芸地区でヤツガシラ を発見しましたが、今日は本島南部のなんでもない公園で今季2羽目となるヤツガシラを見つけてしまいました。^^ 今回の個体はかなり愛想がよく近くを軽トラや散歩の人が通ってもあまり警戒していませんでした。
さらにその後、海岸へ他の鳥を見に行くとなんと上空を3羽目のヤツガシラが通過。後背地の畑に降りたと思われますが、時間切れで探し出せませんでした。ヤツガシラの飛来の少ない沖縄本島ですが、今年は当たり年なんでしょうかね。

On the lawn, the Eurasian Hoopoe's prey turned out to be earwigs.
At a slightly damp patch at the edge of the lawn, it was eating some kind of larva.

先日、教えてもらったクロウタドリ見られませんでしたが、今日は別の場所で見ることができました。^^ 先日の石垣島 では複数羽のクロウタドリ情報をもらったのですが、時間がなくて探しきれず見られなかったのが心残りでした。ありがとうございます。
自動車の行き来が激しい場所でしたが、何度か姿を現してくれました。今年の沖縄本島はクロウタドリもヤツガシラも複数羽入っています。春の渡り序盤ですが、なかなかの出だしです。この調子でいろいろ入ってくれると嬉しいですね。^^
A Common Blackbird that flew up into a tree, startled by a rental car.
Even when people or vehicles scared it into the bushes, after a short while it would come back down to the ground and start foraging.
The Common Blackbird was a beautiful adult male.
今季初のツバメチドリを確認しました。雨覆に多少冬羽が残っていますが、ほとんど夏羽になり美しい個体です。芝生の広場で小さな虫を捕まえていました。ツバメチドリはこれからどんどん増えるでしょう。
ツバメチドリと同じ芝生にタイワンハクセキレイが数羽のハクセキレイと群れていました。
小さな公園には、若いシマアカモズが1羽。越冬しているシロハラやウグイスもまだ残っています。越冬組を尻目にイソヒヨドリは巣材を集めて東屋に巣を作っていました。メスが巣材を運び、オスは近くで見張り番をしたりメスの姿が見えなくなると呼び戻すかのように美しい声でさえずっていました。

いつも3羽のヤマシギがいたポイントで7羽を確認できました。春の渡りの移動個体が入ったのか? それとも今までいたけど気づかなかっただけか? 先日は1羽だけ だったんですけどね。^^; 後日、確認が必要だなー。

Perhaps because it is used to light from the street lamps nearby, it walks right toward me even when I shine a torch on it.
The bill is muddy all the way to the base. It seems to be probing deep into the soil searching for prey.
It is on guard, watching to see what we will do.
Even like this, the eyes catch the light, so you can spot it.
数日前に漫湖に入っていたソリハシセイタカシギですが、その後、行方不明になって見られませんでした。そろそろだなと思っていたら、今朝、三角池に入りました。^^
ソリハシセイタカシギは昨年の12月に2羽 が三角池に入ったので見ているのですが、春の渡りのシーズンの出会いは数年ぶりでした。
コアオアシシギも今季初確認。夏羽に変わった個体が1羽いました。
三角池は、アオアシシギが20羽ほどいました。カモ類やセイタカシギ、タシギ、オオバンは数を減らしていた。クロツラヘラサギは15羽が岸で休んでいました。
Part of the black areas has a brownish tinge, and the bill is short and sharply upturned, so perhaps a young female? It's a subtle and tricky one. ^^;
The Pied Avocet was foraging close to a group of Black-winged Stilts. High tide had raised the water level, so the avocet's long legs were not visible.
The Marsh Sandpiper is transitioning from winter to summer plumage. The bird vaguely visible in the background is a Common Snipe.

今にも降り出しそうな天気でしたが、米須海岸に出向くとシマアジがいました。
シマアジはオスとメスがいたのですが、ハヤブサが現れ、干潮でただでさえカモまで距離があるのにさらに遠くへ追いやってくれました…。^^; アメリカヒドリっぽいのもいたのに遠いのと雨が降り出したのでそれ以上探すのを諦めました。
シマアジのほかには、オカヨシガモやオナガガモ、コガモ、ヒドリガモ、ハシビロガモなどが数は少なくなりましたが滞在中です。

Of all the ducks in the flock, the Garganey came closest and preened for me. The female was flushed by a Peregrine Falcon and could not be relocated.

5日前にヤツガシラ が入った公園に再びヤツガシラが現れました。前回の写真と見比べてみると明らかに別個体。今年はヤツガシラの当たり年なのか、南部の狭い範囲で4羽も確認されています。
今回入ったヤツガシラも前回の個体と全く同じ場所で採餌していました。私たちには分からない何かを感じて虫が多い場所を探し当てる能力があるのでしょうかね。不思議です。

It pulled a Opisthoplatia orientalis out of the grass.
It finished it off, then gulped it down.

越冬ヤマシギの様子を見てきました。 先日の7羽 から数を減らし、今回は3羽のみの確認でした。
田んぼのゴイサギはあんなにたくさんいたのに、見つかったのは幼鳥1羽のみでした。沖縄本島で近年、繁殖する個体も増えていますが、いなくなったのは春の渡り組だったのかもしれません。
ほかにはアオバズク2羽とタゲリ、アオアシシギ、セイタカシギ、カルガモなどを夜の田んぼで観察できました。

Of the several dozen Black-crowned Night Herons that had been there, only this one juvenile remained.
あちこちでリュウキュウツバメが巣作りに励んでいます。
2羽のリュウキュウツバメが田んぼで泥を集めると近くの道の駅ゆいゆい国頭の建物へ運んでいた。
I couldn't tell which was male and which was female, but the two of them were collecting mud together and carrying it to the same spot.

ギンムクドリとツグミを確認しました。ギンムクドリは、カラムクドリやコムクドリに比べると少ないです。
同じゴルフ場に沖縄本島では珍しいツグミもいました。石垣島など八重山地方にはそれなりの数が越冬しますが、沖縄本島でツグミは渡りの季節にごく少数を確認するのみです。
ほかのツグミの仲間も期待したのですが、この1羽だけでした。

ヤツガシラ3羽を農耕地で発見しました。遠くを飛び去る個体を入れると4羽。これで沖縄本島でのヤツガシラは今季10羽確認したことになります。
沖縄本島に赴任してきて3年目。1、2年目は全く見つからなかったヤツガシラは、今年は南部から北部まで各地で見つけられました。当たり年なのか今まで探す場所が悪かったのか…。

There were two of them — one blurred in the foreground.
This Eurasian Hoopoe was alone. After feeding, it was relaxing up in a Chinaberry tree.
It was a little wary of the farmer, but didn't fly off — after a short while it was back to searching earnestly for food.
Whether it had just arrived from migration or not, even when a light truck passed right in front of it, this Eurasian Hoopoe sat down and stayed put for some time.
It was rooting out cockroaches from soil that a wild boar had turned over.
It drops prey it had tossed up and tried to swallow. Tired from the long journey, perhaps?
Startled by a motorbike, it flew up into a tree. Its body is sleeked down from the tension. ^^

Spotted a Eurasian Hoopoe flying in the distance. Including this individual, I was able to confirm four birds in the same area.
先週のソリハシセイタカシギとコアオアシシギ はまだ三角池に滞在していました。滞在12日目。
沖縄では珍しいヨシガモも1羽入っていました。ほかにはアオアシシギが10羽ほどにハシビロガモ、オオバンなど。コガモはメスのみが10羽ほど滞在中。

Falcated Duck are rare in Okinawa, but this year I observed four individuals — two males and two females — at three different locations.
I think Common Greenshanks come and go from autumn through the spring migration, but they have been at Sankakuike the whole time.
1月7日に最後の確認をしていたニシオジロビタキ はまだいました。約80日ぶりの再会となりました。ニシオジロビタキは、 昨年の12月21日に発見 してから少なくとも3カ月間は、同じ公園で逗留していることになります。
今日は 同じ場所に現れたヤツガシラ の近くで餌探ししていました。ヤツガシラが地面を突くと出てくる小さな虫でも食っているんでしょうか? そんな行動でした。
とっくに北上して行ったと思っていたニシオジロビタキだけど、まだいたんですねー。^^
Going from winter plumage to summer plumage, I get the sense the colouring of the plumage has changed somewhat.
It came down to the ground to feed. It didn't venture out into open areas much.
なんと今季11羽目となるヤツガシラが現れました!! 金武町の伊芸地区で3月11日に今季初となるヤツガシラ を見つけてから16日間で南部の糸満市から北部の国頭村まであちこちで観察撮影することができました。^^ 鳥仲間が見つけた個体を合わすと14羽のヤツガシラが沖縄本島で確認されました。
どこの個体も3日以内には抜けてしまいました。春の渡りはヤツガシラに限らず動きが早いですね。
ここには 昨年末から越冬しているニシオジロビタキ がいますが、今日はヤツガシラにつきまとって採餌していました。ヤツガシラが餌探しで地面を突いたりして驚き出て来た虫でも狙っているのか?
The Eurasian Hoopoe was dust-bathing and catching insects to eat.
When it found a cockroach, it tossed it into the air and swallowed it in one go. The Eurasian Hoopoes will build up their strength in Okinawa and push further north. I hope they make it safely to their breeding grounds.
沖縄本島赴任3年が終わるので、最後に家族でやんばるに1泊旅行してきました。
やんばるに行けば必ず会えるヤンバルクイナですが、道路じゃない自然な環境で写真を撮ろうと思うと待ち時間が億劫なので、夜ばかりを狙っていました。しかし、最後のやんばるなので鳴き声を頼りに出てくるだろうと予測した草むらにレンズを向けガードレールに身を隠して20分ほど経過したところで1羽のヤンバルクイナが現れました。アスファルトと違い、緑の中のヤンバルクイナはいいものですね。^^
ついでに道路を挟んで鳴き交わしていたヤンバルクイナも狙ってみると、イノシシが掘り返したと思われる場所へ出てきました。
最後のやんばるでヤンバルクイナを2羽首尾よく撮影することができました。久しぶりの昼間のヤンバルクイナでした!!
As I listened to the calls of an Okinawa Rail coming from within the shrubs, I realised it was moving gradually in one direction. I trained my lens on the grass in that direction, and the Okinawa Rail suddenly popped its head out.
There is mud on its bill. Perhaps it had been digging for food somewhere in the shrubs.
The Okinawa Rail, ever wary, quickly disappeared into the undergrowth after this.
