シロチドリ vs. 野良猫(動画あり)
今日は、二十四節気の一つで春の雨が降るころとされる穀雨でした。一昨日には、沖縄では1カ月ぶりとなる雨が降りましたが、ダムの貯水率は相変わらずの半分以下で慈雨とはならず…。^^; 波照間島では、4月の観測史上最高となる30.5度を記録したそうです。
3日前に見つけたシロチドリの巣 の様子をのぞいてきました。今日は、4巣に一つ追加して5巣が確認できました。1巣を除いて4巣では、メスが抱卵していました。
先日も書いた通り、ここは野良猫がいるのですが、今日は、3頭も野良猫が現れた。巣の近くを通るとシロチドリは、あっさりと逃げていた。ヒナが孵っていたら擬傷行動をするのですが、卵の場合はどの親鳥も素早く逃げるようです。
野良猫は、世界中で野鳥に甚大な被害を及ぼしています。なんとかしてほしいですね。

After a cat came and the parent flushed from the nest, three eggs were left behind.

Here too, the parent fled when a cat passed by. It looks like two eggs. If it goes up to three, I'll be able to estimate the hatch date, so I'll keep watching.
This spot is a bit further away. No cats passing through, so it should be fine.
This Kentish Plover was an individual that didn't flush even when cats or people passed close by.

Cats are cute enough in themselves, but once out in the wild they're a threat to wild birds and small animals. Control is necessary.
