We'll drive you around Ishigaki Island to wherever the birds are showing best that day. Observation is mostly from inside the vehicle, and we keep it to a maximum of 3 guests so everyone can take their time.
本日、コノハズクのヒナが初めて巣の外へ顔を出しました。昨年は、 6/30日に1羽目が巣立ち して、 7/3には全て巣立ち ました。今年もほぼ同時期です。
きょうは、保護したコノハズクを搬送した縁で私の飼っているオカメインコやセキセイ、文鳥などを診てもらっている獣医の先生や師匠、オランダ人などと観察しました。^^
明日から名古屋へ3日間ほど行くので、今年は巣立ちは見られなさそうです。^^;

Two have come out. Last year there were three in total — I wonder how many this year.
コノハズクのヒナが2巣で巣立ちました。 ヒカゲヘゴの巣は7/4に巣立った ようです。私は、名古屋へ行っていて見ることができませんでした…。^^;
人工物で営巣していたコノハズク は7/5に巣立ったようで、親鳥はいつもと違う木で見張りをしていました。ツミが近くで抱卵しているのでじっくり探せず、ヒナは見つかりませんでした。
昼間に2声鳴くことはよくあるコノハズクですが、きょうは長いこと鳴いてくれて動画も撮れました。
It had moved to a spot about 20 metres from the gazebo where the Ryukyu Scops Owl had been nesting. Comparing close-up shots with earlier photos, there are several matching features — 99% certain it's the same individual.
The chicks should be nearby, but with Japanese Sparrowhawks nesting close by, a short search turned up nothing… ^^;
Ryukyu Scops Owls tend to be less wary of people than Grey Nightjar, but this male shows absolutely no fear of humans.

アカショウビンの子育ても終盤に入り、あと数日で巣立ちでしょう。ミラーレスを巣の下にセットして動画も撮れましたがピントをマニュアルにするのを忘れたのでたまにピントが勝手に動きます…。^^;
かなりの斜面にある巣なのでテント式のブラインドに入れず、ブラインドネットを立木に取り付けて撮影しました。すぐ横が30メートルほどの崖なので恐る々ゝの撮影でした。^^;
ブラインドは外すのが大変なので、そのままにしてきました。明日回収に行きます。
It caught a large brown cicada directly above the blind and fed it to the chicks. Large brown cicadas make good prey for Ruddy Kingfishers.

人工物に営巣していたコノハズク のヒナはやはり7/5の夜に巣立っていたようで、きょう、近くの木で見つけることができました。^^ もう1羽はまだ巣立っておらず、巣穴から上半身をのぞかせていました。
A chick that fledged on 5 July. Ryukyu Scops Owl chicks are all fluffy and look like a pampas-grass owl figurine. ^^

The other one is expected to fledge tonight.
明日から台風が接近してくるので、 昨日、張りっぱなしにしていたブラインド を回収がてらアカショウビンの営巣を観察してきました。昨日は、動画のオートフォーカスを失敗したので、きょうは固定で撮ってきました。^^ 巣立ち直前と巣立ち後のヒナが使う鳴き声も撮れました。
4羽とも順調に育っているようです。台風被害がないことを祈るばかりです。
It brought in a Yaeyama giant cockroach — Japan's largest cockroach. When I was out photographing fireflies once, one of these landed on my glasses and I had the momentary sensation of going blind. ^^;

東屋に営巣していたコノハズク は全て巣立ったようです。近くに4羽いるオスのコノハズクたちが一斉に鳴き出し、つかみ合いのケンカをして地面に落ちてくるハプニングもありました。以前は、カラスと組んず解れつで地面に落ちてきたのを見たことがあります。
さえずっているところは、動画に納めることができました。クマゼミの鳴き声がうるさいですが。^^;

台風前で強風やスコールがありますが、コノハズクはまだいました。巣立ったヒナの近くで見張りをしているのでしょう。
ヒナは、台風被害に遭わず無事に育ってほしいものです。
Soaked by rain, it appears to be watching over the chicks from a tree swaying in strong winds. This is probably the last time the Ryukyu Scops Owl will be seen during the day this season.
台風の暴風を避けて、アジサシの仲間やシギ、チドリが風裏になる大浜海岸から宮良川河口付近に集まっていました。
暴風圏の中、ロクヨンを持って海岸を歩いていたので、少し浮いていたようです。^^;
Among the many terns gathered, the Roseate Tern was particularly beautiful.
The Black-naped Tern and Little Tern were hunched down, bracing against the storm.
There were several dozen terns, so I looked for a Thick-billed Tern as well, but unfortunately none was present.
The Grey-tailed Tattler was also foraging while sheltering from the wind.
The wind was blowing at around 35 metres per second, but the terns did manage to feed occasionally.
アカショウビンの営巣を観察していたら、リュウキュウキビタキが親子でやってきました。^^ 巣立って間もないようでした。

予定では、今日の巣立ちでしたが11:00〜18:00までには巣立ちませんでした。^^; ヒナが5羽もいるので生育がゆっくりだったりするのでしょうか? 今まで観察してきたアカショウビンは3〜4羽でした。5羽は初めてで、他の人に聞いてもそのようです。
ここのアカショウビンは、サキシマキノボリトカゲやイシガキトカゲ、カニ、イナゴ、イシガキモリバッタ、クマゼミなどバラエティーに富んだ獲物を持ってきます。^^
A Ruddy Kingfisher brought in a crab. It looks like a mitten crab (Eriocheir sp.).
The crab seemed quite difficult to handle, and the bird was struggling to push it into the chick's mouth. ^^;
Next, it brought a large cicada.
It was obscured by the wing, but it brought in an Ishigaki skink.
It brought in a grasshopper.
本日、アカショウビンのヒナ3羽が巣立ちました。2羽は私が現場に着く前に巣立ったようで、1羽はスコールが来て避難しつつ昼飯を食ってる間に巣立ってしまった模様です。巣立ちを促すためか巣穴から見える場所に親鳥が止まったり、餌をヒナの口に入れてもなかなか餌を離さない行動をしていました。

6/25に孵化を確認しているので、孵化後19日での巣立ちでした。アカショウビンの巣立ちとしては1日遅いです。残りの2羽も夕方には「ピーピー」という鳴き声から巣立ち直前の「ケッケッ」に変化したので明日には巣立つことでしょう。
今日運んできた餌は、カエルやイシガキモリバッタ、緑のバッタなどでした。
それと、フィールドでお会いしたバードウオッチャーのご夫婦に「shimasobaさんですか?」って聞かれちゃいました。^^; 車が緑だから分かるのかなー?
The parent brought a grasshopper but left without giving it to the chicks.
Today was a day with a lot of grasshoppers.
It brought a frog for the first time. Ruddy Kingfishers rarely bring frogs.
It caught an Ishigaki forest grasshopper. I once heard that the Ishigaki forest grasshopper carries toxins because it feeds on the leaves of the poisonous Alocasia odora — but perhaps that doesn't matter to the Ruddy Kingfisher?
It took quite a while to finally offer this frog to the chicks. I wonder if it is behaviour meant to encourage the Ruddy Kingfisher chicks to fledge?
今日は、6時に起きて7時前には現場に着いたのですが、すでに1羽巣立っていました。午後、4番目に巣立ったと思われるヒナを見つけました。残り1羽は、午後7時までに巣立ちしませんでした。^^; 3日間にわたる巣立ちなんて初めての経験。
午前中は非常に暗く、ISO感度は4000から10000ぐらいを使いました。
7月16日追記： まだ、最後のヒナが残っているそうです。^^;
7月19日追記： 本日、やっと最後のヒナも巣立ったそうです。なんと最初に巣立ったヒナから遅れること6日間!!

When the Ruddy Kingfishers here fledge they go straight down the steep slope, so I couldn't observe any food transfers from parent to chick…
It brought in a grasshopper.

The one chick left behind seemed full at times and refused food on several occasions. Prey appears to be plentiful — good conditions for the Ruddy Kingfishers.
It also brought in a Crested Tree Lizard. The lizard was longer than the chick's total body length, but it swallowed it whole.
ペアのうち1羽がカラスに殺され、片親で4羽のヒナを一生懸命に育てていた農園のアカショウビン。巣立ちの1週間ほど前に、4羽のうち3羽のヒナがカラスの餌食になりましたが、生き残った最後の1羽は本日無事に巣立ちました。
孵化後、18日で予定通りでした。

A parent arriving with what looks like a cicada. The Ruddy Kingfishers here fly straight into the nest hole without perching anywhere first, so I was caught off guard many times. The orchard is well tended, so the background is beautiful too. ^^
A Ruddy Kingfisher chick peering out from a nest hole drilled into a Yaeyama palm. It fledged shortly after this, and perhaps because it was raised alone, its flight ability was remarkably strong — it flew nearly 40 metres in one go. ^^;
It perched on a palm frond. A Ruddy Kingfisher and a palm — that's Ishigaki Island for you. ^^
It tumbled off the palm frond. It's quite hard to spot against the dried palm leaves — almost the same colour.
数日前、仕事中に見つけた、八重山農林高校の中庭で営巣するアオバズクが巣立ちました。^^ ヒナは1羽だけのようです。生徒に見せてあげたら「かわいー」って。
According to the school principal, it fledged yesterday. Apparently all three — parent and two chicks — were perched together the day before. ^^;

潮が引いてくると、アジサシたちが水浴びのために宮良川河口に集まります。この日は、ベニアジサシ3羽とコアジサシ1羽、エリグロアジサシ10羽、クロハラアジサシ1羽が集まりました。
フラッグ付きのエリグロアジサシは山階鳥類研究所保全研究室鳥類標識センターに連絡したところ、2002年から2013年の間に、沖縄本島周辺で、合計323羽に装着して放鳥したもののうちの一羽と教えていただきました。また、沖縄本島以外でフラッグ付きのエリグロアジサシが観察されたのは今回が初めてだそうです。アルミリングの番号まで読めれば個体識別できるそうなんですが、残念ながらかなりの距離がありましたので、拡大しても判別不能です。
遠いのでロクヨンに2倍のエクステンダかませて1200mmでの撮影です。^^;

One individual with a flag band was mixed in among them. The corners of the flag are heavily worn and rounded, which apparently suggests it is likely an older bird.
Turbid water flowing in from the Miyara River means the surface isn't blue. ^^;
Some were also being scattered by a canoe tour.

シギチの秋の渡りが始まっているようで、田んぼや海岸にぼちぼち姿が見られるようになりました。この日は、キョウジョシギやアカアシシギ、アオアシシギなどが渡ってきていました。アオサギも1羽だけいました。

A small flock of Black-winged Stilts was in the rice paddies.
A few Greenshanks had also come down to the rice paddies.
There were several dozen Wood Sandpipers.
Grey Herons had also come through to Ohama Beach.
クロツラヘラサギとリュウキュウヨシゴイが同じ田んぼにいました。クロツラヘラサギはかなり長いこといます。このまま越冬するのでしょうか。
リュウキュウヨシゴイは、田んぼの茂みから出てきてはオタマジャクシを捕まえて、また同じ茂みにもどるという行動でした。
Juvenile Black-faced Spoonbill. The bird next to it is a Little Egret. The bokeh gets ugly with the 2× extender attached — what you'd call double-line bokeh, maybe?
Ryukyu Striated Heron. It was glowing beautifully in the evening light.
昨日に引き続きアオバズクの巣立ちビナをみてきました。ヒナは昨日の枝からほとんど移動していませんでした。両親はヒナを近くで見守っています。

最近は、海岸や田んぼばかり見ていましたが、10日ぶりにアカショウビンのポイントである屋良部岳林道や嵩田林道、バンナ公園を見てきました。アカショウビン以外には、カンムリワシやリュウキュウキビタキなどが見られました。
It kept glancing upward. Nothing seemed to be there, but maybe the Ruddy Kingfisher saw something.
Breeding is over and the moult has begun — they really do look ragged this time of year. ^^;
嵩田林道でカンムリワシにあいました。いつもの慣れた個体です。営巣に成功していれば間もなく真っ白な巣立ちビナが見られるでしょう。今年は何羽の幼鳥が見られるか楽しみです。
