The second-generation Ogasawara Maru was to retire after its final voyage on June 27, 2016, and since a honeymoon gave me an excuse to take about a week off — plus my transfer to the Naha bureau in February made getting there considerably easier than from Ishigaki Island — I took the plunge and headed out to Chichijima and Hahajima in the Ogasawara Islands for seven days, from May 27 to June 2.
